This protein confers resistance to Zeocin by binding to the antibiotic and preventing it from binding DNA. Zeocin is effective on most aerobic cells and can be used for selection in mammalian cell lines, yeast, and bacteria. For Zeocin to be active, the salt concentration in the selection media must be less than 90 mM NaCl. The amount of Zeocin required for selection will vary with each cell type.
